Slurp is a Malaysian made cloud-based POS system that is designed to engage with customers and make it easy for them to order food or to call for the bill, from within a single connected app. The Slurp system is made up of Slurp Central (which is the core POS system), Slurp ordering app for customers, Slurp waiter app, and Slurp Cloud for on-demand sales/data analytics.
The free Slurp customer app takes out some of the hassles of dining out by giving you the flexibility to decide from the available menu before you even arrive at the restaurant. For those dining in, once you have selected and added your selections into the cart, simply walk into the participating restaurant and send them a QR code from your table. It’s as simple as that. The order will be processed and will be sent to your table when its ready. However, a Slurp representative has informed us that there are currently no options for the users to order ahead for dining in; but I believe a system could be worked out for regular customers when the system evolves.
What’s great about Slurp though is that it helps restaurants too by reducing the number of staff required while at the same time making the restaurant more efficient; since the POS system handles everything from taking orders, to sending the orders to the kitchen, notifying the wait staff when the food is ready, calling for the bill when the customer is done, and also to handle the billing and payment. The restaurant will receive all incoming orders on an iPad, via a single interface of the Slurp Central POS system.
Getting started on Slurp app is fairly easy. New users will need to register for an account but don’t worry, it currently doesn’t ask for any payment options to be added. Once you’ve logged in to the app, you’ll be presented with a list of restaurants that are currently using the system. Here’s where the developers have added a really nice touch; select a restaurant and you will be notified immediately if their system is offline. The app will either notify you to hail the waiter once you get there, or give you an option to make a call to the restaurant (how cool is that?). Even when offline, you can still get to the menu section of restaurant and pick out your food but you can’t send the orders anywhere as it only serves as a note/reminder of what you want.
Anyway, going back to the app, if the system in the particular restaurant is working as it should, you can browse through the menu and add selections to your cart. Once items have been added, tap the ‘View Cart’ button at the bottom and your selections, along with their prices, will show up. This is where you can decide on how to want to have them. Based on the options available at the restaurant, you can either choose between Dine In, Takeaway, or Delivery:
- Dine In: Will launch the built-in QR code scanner for you to scan the table code. This info will then be sent to to kitchen and the restaurant will know where you’re sitting. Food will be delivered to your table once it has been prepared.
- Takeaway: Tapping on this option will submit your orders and the app is supposed to prompt for your contact details; so that the restaurant could call to confirm. Unfortunately, this did not happen when I tried it, and I was not able to clear the cart as well. I’m not sure if the failure was on the restaurant or on the system side.
- Delivery: This will bring up a page for you to enter the address, contact number, delivery date and time. Slurp will then process the order and a representative from the restaurant will make the delivery to the address provided.
The POS system looks like it’s been built with customer interaction in mind and the app looks polished but there are still a number of bugs to be ironed out. I can see that the app is still open for abuse by those trying to play pranks but I’m sure these kinks can be ironed out with feedback from users.
The Slurp POS system is a great way for both new and existing F&B outlets to manage their food and drinks menu, monitor check-in and check-out times of wait staff, and to manage their inventory. The system is available in two packages; Slurp Basic which is priced at RM 150 per month, and Slurp Premier at RM 300 per month. Both packages include systems for up to 3 outlets and owners will be billed yearly. Slurp is also offered as a complete package at RM 4,888 that includes hardware components (of iPad, iPad stand, a cash drawer, and a receipt printer), the backend service (inclusive of first year cloud service), and support (also included for the first year). If you’re a business owner and would like to see how Slurp can work for you, schedule for a live demo and the team will contact you to arrange for one. Owners can also email Slurp for promotional packages or for more info on the terms and conditions.
Slurp is developed by Silent Mode Sdn Bhd, which is a spinoff of Terato Tech, the company behind games such as Kangkung Krush Fiasco and the indie favourite ROTO. The free customer app is available now for download on both Android and iOS users.
