Moto 360 2nd gen from Lazada

One of the first Android Wear, the Motorola Moto 360 smartwatch, was first unveiled on March 18th 2014 followed by its release in the US on September 5th 2014. It passed our SIRIM certification sometime in October 2014, with it showing up on DirectD on February 27th 2015, for RM899. All these happened after Google announced that Lenovo will be acquiring Motorola Mobility from it. Since then, the acquisition has been completed, with Lenovo even dropping the Motorola branding from its Moto devices. Meanwhile, while these events were taking place, around a year after the first, the second generation Moto 360 was announced at IFA on September 14th 2015. If you think that the Moto 360 (2nd generation) is coming soon to Malaysia, you’d be right. In fact, it’s already here. On January 27th 2016, Lazada Malaysia simply announced this “exclusive” on its Facebook Page, without any official announcements from Lenovo Malaysia or even Brightstar Malaysia. It is available now starting at RM1,399.

There are three variants of this 2015 Moto 360 available on Lazada. The cheapest is the 42mm Black model with Black Leather straps, for RM1,399. The Rose Gold model in the same 42mm size with Blush Leather straps are RM100 more just for the colors, at RM1,499. Finally, you have the larger, 46mm Silver Moto 360 with Cognac Leather straps for RM1,599.

Lazada has been known to have a lot of merchants selling knock-offs, but fret not, the three variants of the 2nd gen Moto 360 are shown as “Sold & Fulfilled by Lazada” with an “official one-year one-to-one swap warranty” by Lenovo Malaysia.

The new Moto 360 is made from a 316L stainless steel case with Horween leather. It also supports wireless charging through the supplied cradle just like the first generation. The following are rest of the specifications, but bear in mind you won’t necessarily get the same straps sizes from Lazada.

Moto 360 (2015) specifications
  • Dimensions: Mens — 42mm case, requires a 20mm band / Mens — 46mm case, requires a 22mm band / Womens — 42mm case, requires a 16mm band

  • Display: Corning Gorilla Glass 3 Backlit LCD Mens 42mm and  Womens — 1.37” (35mm), 263ppi (360 x 325); Mens 46mm — 1.56” (40mm), 233ppi (360 x 330)
  • Battery: Mens 42mm and Womens — 300mAh, up to 1.5 day of mixed use with Ambient off; Mens 46mm — 400mAh, up to 2 days of mixed used with Ambient off; all variants up to a full day of mixed use with Ambient on

  • Bands: Quick-release bands (Men 42mm — requires a 20mm band; Mens 46mm — requires a 22mm band; Womens — requires a 16mm band)

The battery life is said to be better than the first generation which is good, but unfortunately, it still has the “flat tire” display, where it’s not completely round. Some people don’t mind it, but for some, it’s a deal breaker. You would think Lenovo/Motorola would address this in its second generation smartwatch. For comparison, the Samsung Gear S2 (in Dark Gray and Silver) is going for RM1,399, while the Gear S2 classic (in Black) will set you back RM1,599. They are similarly priced, and the Gear S2 looks more like a regular watch (smaller size), but it runs on Tizen. If Android Wear is your thing, Huawei Watch is a higher-end device, especially its denser 400 x 400, 1.4-inch display (at approximately 286ppi). But it also comes at higher prices too; RM1,799 for the Stainless Steel case (with either the Stainless Link Bracelet or Black Leather Strap) and RM1,999 for the Black Plated Stainless case with Black Stainless Steel Link Bracelet.

Moto 360 Sport

Meanwhile, there was also the Moto 360 Sport announced alongside the new 360. It’s geared towards the fitness crowd, with a more sunlight-legible AnyLight Hybrid display, integrated GPS, internal storage for music, the same IP67, and durable silicone bands with UV coating. Unfortunately, we are not getting this variant here yet, if ever.
