If you must know, Uber has announced that is has indeed been, to borrow its own words, cooking up a brand new app in the background. The UberEATS app is available now to be sampled (iOS and Android), and it already works in a few major cities in the US, together with one in Canada. Uber seems to have had a soft opening for Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Toronto, and promises to start serving Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, Melbourne, New York, Paris, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. too, soon.
The service is not available in Malaysia yet but users can sign up with UberEATS to be notified when it is. In the meantime, here’s a little video to whet your appetite:
UberEATS wants to make the chore of going out to have great food easier by bringing the food directly to customers instead (staying in to eat out?). This is similar to what foodpanda does, but with the familiarity of the Uber brand and its expansive network of partners. Customers will be able to make orders every day of the week, and it won’t matter if it’s day or night; as long as the picked restaurants are open, users will get their food. With the app, customers can look for something specific they crave for, or just browse through and pick one.
“Matching you with the perfect meal is a complex endeavor. With the launch of the UberEATS app, we’re providing an experience completely tailored to food to help you get that perfect meal. In the same way Uber makes it easy to get from A to B, UberEATS makes it easy to get food from the best restaurants in your city. Because an Uber driver-partner is never more than a few minutes away, as soon as the food’s ready it’s on its way.”
— Jason Droege, Head of UberEVERYTHING.
Having been around for the past year and half transporting a city’s offerings in minutes, Uber was able to learn more about the food delivery service. It also learnt that ordering food is not the same as booking a ride, which is why it decided to have a standalone app for the former. Restaurants too have been putting Uber’s network to work and have been expanding the distances that they’d usually cover, for deliveries.
With UberEATS, customers can not only find and order their food within the app, but will also be able to follow its journey back to them. There’s even an Instant Delivery menu in which daily specials from select local restaurants can be delivered in just 10 minutes or less. With UberEATS, it is now possible to have your cake, come to you, and eat it too.
