YouTube Gaming Family-Medium

YouTube Gaming is finally official in Malaysia on April 7th, as the company continues to expand to new markets it wasn’t in before. YouTube Gaming is a branch of the main YouTube service, that offers a dedicated app/channel to stream live or recorded gameplays. Folks in the know may liken the service to Amazon-owned Twitch.

YouTube Gaming was first announced in June of 2015 and went live in August. Since then, YouTube also enabled Mobile Capture, which uses Android 5.0 Lollipop’s screen recording capabilities, to capture and immediately upload/stream it for audiences. In March 2016, around six months later after the launch, YouTube Gaming was ready to be expanded to more countries including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland. Just a month following that, it’s now available in India, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

YouTube Gaming 7 Go Live

YouTube Gaming’s site and apps for Android and iOS have been available in the market since its launch, but now that it’s official in Malaysia, we should have the whole set of features unlocked for us, including the aforementioned Mobile Capture. This is an excellent feature for gamers because for the first time ever, they can now stream live gameplay from their Android devices without the need to tether it to a computer. The app does an overlay user interface on top of the game, to provide controls for gamers to easily type a comment or to stream selfie reactions during gameplay. But alas, Mobile Capture is not available for iOS but works only on Android due to the former’s limitations. However on the desktop, YouTube already has the live-streaming feature which can be used for PC games.

For viewers, YouTube Gaming has a few tricks up its sleeve too. Besides the good ol’ feature of bookmarking videos to ‘Watch Later’, the app also allows importing of subscriptions from the main YouTube app. If the device supports it, YouTube Gaming (on Android) also has a pop-out video player to keep it viewable on top of other apps.

YouTube Gaming 8 New Sponsor

Back to gamers who are also content creators, YouTube Gaming also has ‘Fan Funding and Sponsorships’, where “sponsors” can subscribe to a monthly payment and get perks like a live chat badge chosen by the sponsored creator/gamer, and access to exclusive chat sessions with said gamer. The content are not put behind a paywall, but instead creators/gamers get to choose the types of bonuses to give out to sponsors. Think of it like a recurring PayPal donation or more accurately, Patreon.

To get started, visit https://gaming.youtube.com/ or install the apps for Android and iOS.
