GrabCar (Economy) now 60% cheaper email

Due to the overwhelming response of Grab’s “RM1 Ride Promo”, the company is offering yet another deal you cannot refuse, and this time it’s a permanent fare structure revision (until the next price revision, of course). GrabCar (Economy) rides are now up to 60% cheaper for short rides.

That “RM1 Ride Promo” was actually an RM6 discount for rides shorter than 5 kilometers. Because the first 5km of an economy GrabCar ride costs RM7, so the RM6 discount means any short rides no longer than 5km is only RM1. Based on the data Grab got from this promo, the company has decided to implement two things permanently:

  • Economy GrabCar’s base fare is now revised to RM1;
  • GrabCar (Economy) no longer has the minimum fare of RM7 for rides shorter than 5km.

It is not specified whether this is also applied to the premium GrabCar+ rides, but looks like it’s not. A quick test reveals that GrabCar+ (Premium) charges RM15 for a 2km ride, but GrabCar (Economy) is only RM4 with the new, revised fare.

Grab gave other examples of short rides and while they’re not exactly 60% cheaper, an economy GrabCar ride from KLCC to The Intermark is 57% lower than it once was:

  • KLCC to The Intermark: RM7 RM3 (57% lower)
  • Bangsar Village to Bangsar LRT Station: RM7 RM4 (43% lower)
  • 1 Mont Kiara to Publika: RM7 RM5 (28% lower)

Grab also gave a few examples on why this is a big deal for short rides. The lower cost suddenly removes the barrier to hail economy GrabCar rides for last-mile travels, like the trip from the LRT station to the office, lunch out with colleagues, or a quick shopping trip. Because the fare is fixed according to distance, traffic conditions are not a concern. It also removes the need to hunt for a parking spot, which is an added bonus. By the way, Grab is not saying it is now 60% cheaper than budget taxis or Uber; the new fare structure is up to 60% cheaper than its old fare rates… for short rides.

If this is not your first rodeo, you can already enjoy the new fare structure for GrabCar (Economy), available for cash, debit card, and credit card payments. But if you’re using it for the first time, and would like to pay by card, make sure you enter your card details into the app before booking. The latest version of Grab is available for Android and iOS.
