In the wee hours of May 17th, Apple pushed out updates for its operating systems, as well as for its iTunes application for Mac and PC.

iOS 9.3.2

iOS 9.3.2

As a minor update to the previous version, iOS 9.3.2 is the second update to iOS 9.3 that was released back in March 2016. Version 9.3.2 has been in beta since April 6th, with four beta builds pushed out to developers prior to this release.

As always, iOS 9.3.2 is available as an over-the-air (OTA) update which has a smaller file size than the full (operating system) download. On the iPhone 5s, the OTA is just 88.1 MB in size, while the IPSW download on iTunes is at 1.85 GB.

iOS 9.3.2 brought about minor bug fixes and under-the-hood improvements. The most significant fix is to address a bug where some Bluetooth accessories could face audio issue when played from the new iPhone SE. Here are the changes in this update:

iOS 9.3.2 fixes bugs and improves the security of your iPhone or iPad. This update:

  • Fixes an issue where some Bluetooth accessories could experience audio quality issues when paired to the iPhone SE;
  • Fixes an issue where looking up dictionary definitions could fail;
  • Addresses an issue that prevented typing email addresses when using the Japanese Kana keyboard in Mail and Messages;
  • Fixes an issue for VoiceOver users using the Alex voice, where the device switches to a different voice to announce punctuation or spaces;
  • Fixes an issue that prevented MDM servers from installing Custom B2B apps.

Though being a point release, there is another front-facing change that users may notice. iOS 9.3.2 now allows using both Night Shift and Low Power modes simultaneously, something that is weirdly not possible in versions 9.3 and 9.3.1.

OS X El Capitan v10.11.5

OS X El Capitan v10.11.5

On the Mac side, OS X El Capitan was also updated to version 10.11.5. It is the fifth point release since El Capitan came about back in the end of September 2015, and almost two months after the v10.11.4 release. Just like iOS 9.3.2, OS X 10.11.5 has been in beta testing since April 6th with a total of four beta builds seeded to developers before this release.

On the mid-2012 MacBook Air, the update is 907 MB in size, which includes iTunes 12.4.

There is not much else to talk about this update, since it only offers minor bug fixes and improvements. Here is the changelog:

The OS X El Capitan v10.11.5 Update improves the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, and is recommended for all users.

This update includes the following enterprise changes:

  • Fixes an issue where applying a configuration profile to set ‘allowSpotlightInternetResults’ to ‘False’ would cause Spotlight to use large amounts of CPU time;
  • Fixes an issue where applying a configuration profile to set ‘ShutDownDisabledWhileLoggedIn’ to ‘True’ would have no effect;
  • Fixes an issue where only a single NetBoot image would appear in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences, even if multiple NetBoot images were configured on the server.

iTunes 12.4

iTunes Store

Alongside the new OS X build, iTunes was also updated to version 12.4 for both Mac and PC. Even though this minor update brought mostly bug fixes, it also offers a few design tweaks to clean things up. It is also an update to stealthily address an issue reported by some where iTunes deletes music users’ consent. While Apple claims it wasn’t able to reproduce the problem, this update is supposed to provide additional safeguards to prevent the issue from occurring.

iTunes 12.4 came seven months after 12.3, and two months after the previous update which was 12.3.3. Here are the release notes:

  • Now enjoy all of your music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and more in a simpler design;
  • Navigation. Now you can use Back and Forward buttons as you navigate between your Library, Apple Music, iTunes Store, and more;
  • Media Picker. Easily switch between Music, Movies, TV shows and more–and Edit to choose just the items you want;
  • Library and Playlists. Use Sidebar to view your Library in new ways. Drag and drop songs to easily add them to Playlists. And Edit Sidebar to show only your favorite views;
  • Menus. Menus in iTunes are now simpler and easier to use. Use the View menu to customize your Library or try context menus to act on specific items.

tvOS 9.2.1

On the same day, Apple also released tvOS 9.2.1, which is developed specifically for the fourth-generation Apple TV. This update is so minor, there isn’t any changelog available for it, unlike the previous tvOS 9.2 update which brought Siri dictation, among things. Clearly, it is just an update to improve performance and offer stability, and probably not even to fix any significant bugs. tvOS 9.2.1 came around two months after version 9.2, and is the fourth update since tvOS 9 released back in October 2015.

If the user had automatic software updates enabled, tvOS 9.2.1 should be pushed to and updated automatically.

watchOS 2.2.1

Just like tvOS, watchOS 2.2.1 was released on the same day, and it too, isn’t accompanied by any release notes, unlike version 2.2 that offered front-facing features like the ability to pair multiple Apple Watches to a single iPhone. This suggests that it is just a minor update with bug and security fixes. watchOS 2.2.1 also came around two months after version 2.2, and is the fourth update since watchOS 2’s release in September 2015.

watchOS is updated through a paired iPhone. The Watch has to be plugged in and have at least 50 percent of battery left.
