It was only back in March when we’ve covered the arrival of Transcend JetDrive Go 300 in Malaysia. Two months later on May 20th, 2016, Transcend Information, Inc. also brought in the JetDrive Go 500 for the local market. Both are sold as “mobile storage solutions for Apple devices”, and just like the 300, JetDrive Go 500 is also a USB flash drive with a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A connector on one side, and an Apple Lightning connector on the other, making it compatible with recent iOS devices as well as your good ol’ computers. However, unlike the 300, Transcend JetDrive Go 500 only comes in two storage options — 32 GB and 64 GB — for RM309 and RM439 respectively, inclusive of GST. The prices are RM40–60 more expensive than the 300, but the JetDrive Go 500 is more attractive in design, I suppose. You can now get these flash drives in Malaysia from Amble Action Sdn. Bhd., Alphamatic Systems Sdn. Bhd., and World Tech Capital Sdn. Bhd.

As hinted earlier, JetDrive Go 500 adopts a stylish, unibody design made almost entirely of zink alloy construction, which contributes to making it compact (and smaller than JetDrive Go 300). The two connectors can be found at opposite ends, but the Lightning end of it does not come with any cover which is good as people tend to lose those, and bad as the metal surface may oxidize gradually. That said, the design is thoughtful enough to elongate the Lightning connector to take into account that users may have an iPhone case on, and also to keep the width of the body same as its USB Type-A tip to make it able to fit even the tightest of spots on computers. The flash drive comes in Gold and Silver colors, that match the colors of newer Apple devices. Near the base of the Lightning connector is a little loop for you to hook it up to something else, like a key fob.

If the computer supports it, JetDrive Go 500’s USB 3.1 Gen 1 interface could allow file transfers up to 130 MB/s, which is around 28 seconds to copy a 4 GB video over. Unfortunately though, the other end is a Lightning connector that’s using the USB 2.0 interface, so file transfers only have a top speed of 20 MB/s.

Here’s one caveat though. It comes formatted in FAT32 that only allows a maximum of 4 GB per file. If you were to format it to exFAT, iOS won’t be able to recognize the flash drive any longer.

JetDrive Go supported file formats

When the drive is plugged in, you’ll have to use the JetDrive Go app to be able to transfer files to and from your iOS device. Sure, you can manually transfer images to the stick, but the app also supports the ‘Shoot and Save’ function where the photos and videos you’re actively taking can be saved directly to the JetDrive Go 500 without any manual intervention from your end. Besides audio, photos, and videos, the flash drive also supports documents like Adobe PDF, Microsoft Office, and even Apple iWork files.

This is an Apple MFi-certified device, to guarantee its compatibility with current or future iOS devices. As such, it will work with all iOS devices that have a Lightning connector. Transcend JetDrive Go 500 is backed by the company’s two-year limited warranty.
