Edward Ling, Head of Malaysia Sales for Waze; and Jasmine Lee, Chief Marketing Officer of U Mobile.
On April 19th 2016, U Mobile Sdn. Bhd. announced its partnership with Waze in which U Mobile data users will be able to enjoy free data access to the Waze app, from that day onwards until December 31st 2016. This means that U Mobile users who uses Waze in Malaysia in this period will not eat up their monthly data allocation. This great news is made better when U Mobile confirmed that the free waze data access is not only for postpaid monthly data plans, but also for prepaid UMI plans, as well as postpaid and prepaid broadband plans.
While it is applicable to all postpaid and prepaid UMI plans, for broadband, it is only eligible for MB15, MB40, MB68, MB128, and MB128N.
Now for some obligatory quotes. Jasmine Lee, Chief Marketing Officer of U Mobile, shared, “We are a data-centric telco, one that is always looking at ways to enhance our customers’ data experience, whether in terms of value or quality of experience. By partnering with Waze, we are able to reward our customers by giving them free data access to the app. Our customers will be encouraged to play a more active role in updating traffic situations in Malaysia via Waze as their data quota will not be utilized.”
Edward Ling, Head of Malaysia Sales for Waze, added, “Waze has more than two (2) million monthly active users in Kuala Lumpur, driving nearly 263 million kilometers with the app each month. By eliminating cost barriers, U Mobile’s free data partnership entices more drivers to join the Waze community to outsmart traffic together, whether on a daily commute or around major traffic events like Hari Raya and Chinese New Year. Malaysian drivers won’t have to worry about going over data limits, providing further peace of mind on daily commutes. We look forward to seeing how our community grows through this partnership.”
While this is a great news, you should know that the only thing that eats up a lot of data is when you’re downloading new voice prompts, and even then, it is only tens of megabytes (MB). On a normal usage with data turned on, a one hour trip will usually only take around 1MB. If anything, this is just a marketing ploy to get more folks to sign-up for U Mobile, as well as to get more folks to use U Mobile without worry, and in effect, crowdsource more traffic data to improve Waze.
Waze in its updated form, is only available for Android and iOS. For more information about this offer, visit: http://www.u.com.my/promo/waze.
