Though Apple products are on the premium range, it is quite well known for its warranty coverage. Previously, just four months ago in April, Apple issued an iPhone 5 sleep/wake button replacement program for those who were affected. And just last Friday, Apple has put up yet another page, this time it’s for the ‘iPhone 5 Battery Replacement Program’. If anything, it may indicate that the iPhone 5 was a problematic hardware for Apple to manufacture, resulting in issues serious enough to warrant two replacement programs.
On the page, Apple said that only “… a very small percentage of iPhone 5 devices may suddenly experience shorter battery life…” and the affected iPhone 5 devices were released between September 2012 and January 2013. The problem also only occurs on iPhone 5 devices that fall within a small serial number subset.
If you own an iPhone 5, to check for eligibility, just head on to the program page and enter your iPhone’s serial number. Finding the serial number is also stupid easy — tap Settings > General > About and scroll down to find the string.
The replacement process begins in the US and China as of August 22nd, 2014. Other countries including Malaysia, the program will be available on August 29th, 2014.
The beauty of Apple products is that no matter where in Malaysia your iPhone 5 purchase was made, as long as it’s from an Apple Authorized Service Provider, you can bring your eligible device to any of the AASP outlets which you can find here: https://locate.apple.com/my/en/.
As always, backup your iPhone’s data to iTunes and/or iCloud prior to bringing the device in. The reps will turn off the ‘Find my iPhone’ feature before doing a complete factory reset, when turning in the device. While Apple did not specify whether it’ll only replace the battery or the whole phone, it is usually the latter. My first iPhone 5 happened to be acquired around the time period mentioned (January 2013, I think), and back in January, the battery started to deteriorate, especially after the iOS 7 update. I brought it in in February, and fortunately it was eligible for a whole device replacement. Your mileage may vary.
