Hyperlapse from Instagram

It is almost surprising to think that Instagram is only four years old on iOS, two and a half on Android, and just nine months on Windows Phone. It’s priority has always been to offer simple yet ‘powerful’ apps to capture moments in the form of photos and videos to be shared. After the Facebook acquisition on the same month the Android version was released, many feared that the service will be absorbed into the social network, but it seems that Facebook is still keeping its promise to keep Instagram independant and nimble; an example being the incorporation of Instagram video sharing that took place in June 2013. On August 27th, 2014, it has launched a new app called Hyperlapse that lets you easily capture time-lapse videos and apply post-processed stabilizations to make it look cinematic.

Available on iOS only for now, Hyperlapse is a dead simple app to let you capture, preview and share hyper-lapse videos. As mentioned, it has built-in post-capturing image stabilization technology that produces beautiful time-lapse videos that can only be achieved previously using a tripod or other expensive rigs.

Instagram said its Hyperlapse app is designed to be as simple as possible, and it shows. The interface only shows a capture button, with no settings menu whatsoever; there’s not even an option to sign in to Instagram or Facebook. Tapping the capture button begins the recording, and again to stop it; there is no pause.

It is said you can capture up to 45 minutes of video, that can be scrubbed from 1x up to 12x speed (3 minutes and 45 seconds). If you like what you see, you can immediately save it. After that, you can continue to share it to Facebook, Instagram, or Vimeo. If you choose to share it to Instagram, it will create another copy of the video that has the added filters and is cropped to a maximum of 15 seconds.

I did a test run with Hyperlapse, capturing 3 minutes of video to be sped up 12 times into a 15-second clip:

Hyperlapse from Instagram is currently available for iOS only, which you can download here: https://itunes.apple.com/app/id740146917.
