U2-Songs-Of-Innocence-608x608

If you’ve watch the iPhone 6 / Apple Watch keynote on September 10th, at the very end of the two-hour presentation, CEO Tim Cook invited U2 on stage to perform and to announce the band’s new album, Songs of Innocence. As a nice gesture, both parties are also giving the album away free for all iTunes users. The album is available here: https://itunes.apple.com/my/album/songs-of-innocence/id915794155.

U2 is reportedly getting US$100 million out of this partnership, and though they’re giving it away the album for free, they also get to enjoy the exposure and reach only iTunes has. Songs of Innocence will be available as an iTunes-exclusive album in 119 countries, including Malaysia, from September 9th to October 13th 11:59pm Pacific Time (October 14th 3am Malaysian Time).

Now, you would think that Apple and U2 would just promote this and the acquisition of the album is done by us optionally. However, apparently Apple pushed this album to all iTunes account users, meaning almost every iOS device users out there.

If you’re type that streams through Spotify or the like and never use the Music app, you might not even notice this. For many who do, the album started appearing in their collection.

Fortunately, it is rather easy to hide this. For folks who rip CDs and never purchase anything on iTunes, simply go to Settings > Music > and turn off ‘Show All Music’. That way all music tied to their iTunes that isn’t on the device, will be hidden.

The problem is, there are many people who do purchase music on iTunes, would like this feature on, and did not ask for this album, are left with no choice but to deal with it. Until September 15th.

Understandably, a lot of people were annoyed by this gesture, and after many complaints, Apple decided give users the ability to remove it, which is unheard-of, since we can’t even remove our old and unwanted app downloads from our accounts. Apple even put up a support page just for this, and if you’re one of the folks who would like to get rid of it, just head on to https://itunes.com/soi-remove and click on ‘Remove Album’.

So what do you think? Did you have a listen to U2’s Songs of Innocence and did you like it? Would you remove it from your account or just leave it there?
