Google Malaysia sent out an invite on September 24th, titled “Major Update on Google Maps Street View Malaysia”, that will take place on September 30th. It is immediately clear on what the team has to announce. Last year, Google finally opened its Maps turn-by-turn navigation for Android, which was followed shortly by an official iOS version (that also supports navigation). Just a month or so later, it kicked off Google Maps Street View in Malaysia by releasing imagery of 18 sites. However, though the launch is happening three days away, We can already access Street View in Google Maps for Peninsular Malaysia.
It is not an easy undertaking, but Google only took 13 months to achieve this, possibly shorter, as the team needs another few weeks or months to parse and stitch all the images it has captured, on almost every street the vehicles have passed through, in Peninsular Malaysia.
Unfortunately as of now, Both Sabah and Sarawak states still don’t have any Street View imagery, not even for tourist locations. We may find out more in three days on the Street View status in East Malaysia.

To capture these imagery, Google uses a combination of a few ‘vehicles’ — a Chevy, the Trike, and even a backpack-based camera system named the Trekker. For indoors, Google uses a specialized pushcart camera called the Trolley, because it is less clumsy than the bulky Trekker system. We have covered more about this on our piece last year; you can read more about it here: http://www.techattack.my/7762/google-maps-street-view-in-malaysia-kicks-off-with-imagery-of-18-sites/.
Accessing these Street View imagery is easy; simple go to Google Maps, and drag the yellow Pegman on to any street highlighted in blue. On the mobile apps (Android and iOS), just long-press on any location that has Street View, go to the details page, and select the Street View card.
Not much else is known at this point, so we’ll have to wait and see what else is Google Malaysia announcing this Tuesday. Sajith Sivanandan, Managing Director of Google Malaysia will also be at the event as the host. Visit Google Maps or download the mobile apps (Android and iOS) to give it a whirl.
