iOS 8

It is not usual for Apple to roll out a ‘.1’ update to its operating system so close to the initial release; after all, iOS 8 was just out last month. But considering how Apple botched the iOS 8.0.1 update causing many iPhone 6 devices to lose cell connectivity, it is probably wise to distance itself as much as possible from that update, rather than naming it iOS 8.0.3 for instance.

Hence, earlier today, Apple announced that iOS 8.1 will be dropping this Monday, October 20th, in the US, possibly around 1am on October 21st in Malaysia.

iOS 8 brought about new features like universal Spotlight search, third party notification widgets, actionable notification toasts, Family Sharing, app extensions, third party keyboards, and TouchID improvements.

But there are a lot of little bugs and inconsistencies here and there, including the fact that non-Apple keyboards doesn’t stay default, or how the notification toast will get stuck until you hit the Home button. Hopefully iOS 8.1 fixes all these issues.

Besides addressing complaints, iOS 8.1 also serves ‘new’ features like the promised Continuity and Handoff, where works in progress from one device can be picked up from another. Another previously-promised feature to make its debut is iCloud Photos where all of the photos stored on iCloud Drive will be cached and viewable on all supported iOS devices and Macs running Yosemite. There will also be a Windows client, if you can believe it.

Perhaps one of the reasons for Apple to rush iOS 8.1 out is because Apple Pay only works with iOS 8.1, and it will be launching on Monday as well. The Apple Watch that also supports Apple Pay, on the other hand, will only be ready for the public early 2015.

If you’re already on iOS 8, this update is a no-brainer. Get your iOS devices ready for 8.1 this October 20th night, or on the morning of the 21st.
