iCloud Drive

Apple’s cloud initiatives were always poorly implemented, causing it to rebrand the service several times (remember iDisk and MobileMe?) Apple’s iCloud came about on 2011, promising a lot of things, but so far its app data syncing feature is still spotty and unreliable. Plus, it can’t really be used to store your own personal files, regardless of file format. Until now.

iCloud Drive is an extension of the service, and frankly one of the more useful ones. It works just like your usual Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive, where any files you drop into the iCloud Drive folder, will be uploaded and downloaded onto your other computers and devices.

Here are the updated (reduced) pricing tiers for iCloud:

  • 5GB: Free
  • 20GB: US$0.99/month
  • 200GB: US$3.99/month
  • 500GB: US$9.99/month
  • 1TB: US$19.99/month

On the Mac, you’ll just need to upgrade the operating system to OS X Yosemite to be able to use iCloud Drive. Easy right? But get this — Apple had also updated its iCloud desktop application for Windows, that now supports iCloud Drive too. This is great news for iPhone/iPad users who uses Windows machines instead of Macs. The syncing features may not be as robust and reliable as the three competing services mentioned above, but hey, it’s here. Just remember to disable bookmarks sync to avoid duplicates, especially if you’re already syncing your Chrome and Firefox bookmarks through other means. Windows users can set up the iCloud application here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht6413.

iCloud for Windows

In addition to iCloud Drive, Apple has also updated its iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) to work with iCloud Drive on the latest iOS and OS X builds. Though new iOS owners get to download iWork for free, the rest of us can also use the web version of iWork. Oh, did I mention that you can even control the Keynote slides using the Apple Watch?
