Singaporean firm, Crescentrating Pte Ltd, has released a new app for Muslim travellers to help them find places of interests, halal food outlets, as well as to provide prayer times and direction during travels. Crescentrating has a travel app on its own but the new HalalTrip service (which is wholly owned by the former) adds social elements as well as an innovative halal food spotting feature.
Upon launching the HalalTrip app, users will see 4 different sections, specifically, Halal Food Spotter, In-flight Prayer Time Calculator, Travel Dua, and Book A Hotel. Of those only the first 3 are currently operational but HalalTrip has confirmed that its hotel booking feature will be added shortly; along with an additional city guides feature in the near future.
With the food spotting feature, users can either locate nearby halal food using GPS, or check out the latest dishes as well as the restaurants that they’re being served in, from all over the world. To add these places and food to favourites, as well as to start adding their own discoveries, users will need to register for an account. Fortunately, this can be done from within the app and doesn’t take much time.
The second feature of the app provides users with information of prayer locations at the airport as well as the Qiblat while in flight. For this to work, users will need to key-in their flight details, including the time as well as the departure and arrival locations.
The final active feature on the app is a complete collection of Islamic travel prayers. The Travel Dua (doa) feature also provides audio playback for convenience.
Since its launch 3 months ago, the restaurant rating system now has more than 50 rated restaurants from around the world, including Peru, Vietnam, Taiwan, Belgium, USA, and Austria. According to Crescentrating, the halal tourism industry in 2013 was estimated to be worth S$ 140 billion and this is estimated to increase to S$ 192 billion by 2020.
HalalTrip aims to provide an avenue for Muslim from all over the world to share their knowledge of local cuisines as well as eateries that caters to their needs. Users can now plan ahead for their travels instead of relying on signs, cab drivers or even looking for one themselves by asking around.
The free HalalTrip app is available now on iOS as well as Android and it comes with both English and Arabic interface. The company has also confirmed that more languages are in the pipeline.
