Snappymob’s Saved is a personal finance app for iOS. The app had in recent times made it to the official Editor’s Choice in Apple’s App Store in a few big countries including France, Netherlands, Brazil, and Korea.

Being picked as the Editor’s Choice may not be a big deal for some of the more established companies but it certainly is a great achievement for this Malaysian startup. Snappymob is a small group of independent Malaysian developers that have been around since early 2013 (under a different name), and in December of the same year (on the 31st in fact) the team released the first version of the Saved app for iOS (on the very next day, the team even released an Android version, but that’s another story). The team has been working hard on Saved for about a year since the debut and now, while the Android version has gone away, the iOS app has arrived with some major updates.

The aim of the Saved app is to make budgeting hassle-free and fun. Users only need to put in an amount to get started (they will still need to change the currency though; in Settings) and the app will automatically fill in the date and time of the entry. The developers wanted users to be able to add an entry in less than 3 seconds by using as little taps as possible. This minimal entry setup is a good way to keep track of their spendings (and users can come back to edit the entry at any time) but selecting the corresponding categories will result in a better overview. The data will also allow the app to present a visual representation by using either a line graph or pie chart. When a user goes above a pre-determined amount, the animated chart will turn red to depict over-spending.

The app allows users to set a monthly budget (which the app will break down into a daily budget), view usage history in a weekly or monthly format, change the chart to show daily or cumulative spendings, and add own categories (on top of the 20 that comes pre-set). Users can even export the data to other apps in CSV format, as well as perform a backup or restoration of the data using either iCloud or other 3rd party services.

Version 2 of the Saved – Budget and Expense Tracker landed in the App Store about 2 weeks ago and can be purchased for US$ 4.99 (~RM 18). Fortunately, users who have purchased the previous version will get to enjoy this new update for free.

In my personal view, saved is a beautifully designed app that is intuitive yet simple. It has covered all the necessary grounds in keeping track of your spending but I’m not sure if it’s worth the asking price; considering the fact that there are other free apps offering similar functionalities. The price factor becomes especially significant when one weighs in on the facts that the app is only available on one platform, and that it still does not have a web presence. PC, Android, and other platform users will have to look elsewhere for a solution and when they do find it, they won’t have a reason to come back to Saved.
